The Story of the Shot

Capturing a Steamboat Geyser eruption is the holy grail of Yellowstone thermal features. Steamboat is the tallest active geyser in the world, erupting to heights over 300 feet! But it is completely unpredictable. Anywhere from 3 days to 50 years have passed between eruptions. Fortunately, Steamboat Geyser entered a more active eruption phase starting in 2018, which has made things a little easier. But it still requires a good amount of luck and patience.

In mid-June 2022, myself and a friend decided that Steamboat was looking kind of active, like it might erupt at some point in the next few days. So we did what any reasonable people would do: we lugged camp chairs out there and sat and watched it for three days. By the morning of the third day, when it still hadn’t erupted yet, we were beginning to feel discouraged. But around 11:30am, we finally were treated to the moment we had been waiting for! This print is an image of the water phase, which lasts a few minutes and spews water hundreds of feet in the air. Check out my other print of the steam phase too!

Print Type

METAL: Metal prints feature dye directly infused onto a thin sheet of aluminum. They are sleek and modern, featuring vibrant colors and an almost magical luminescence. Because they are made from a solid sheet of metal, they are waterproof and scratch resistant. Also, no framing is required for metal prints! Simply mount the print directly to your wall (mounting hardware is included with each print).

PAPER: Paper prints are un-framed and include just the print itself. The buyer is responsible for matting and framing the print once it has been delivered. That way, you can use a frame that you already have, or choose your own custom frame to better match your existing décor.

PLEASE NOTE: All prints ship directly from my print lab partner and are therefore not able to be signed. If you are interested in a signed print, please contact me to place a custom order. Signed prints usually cost slightly more since I need to have the print shipped twice (once from the print lab to me, and again from me to you).

Shipping

All orders ship for free. Please allow 2-4 weeks total for production and shipping/delivery. At this time, I am only able to ship to the contiguous 48 US states. Any orders with a shipping address outside of this area will be canceled and refunded.
